Intro
Becoming a “Domestic Diva” was a no-brainer. My husband and I had already assumed I would take on the role of homemaker once we started having children. We didn’t discuss it much, it was just the natural way of life since both of our mothers had done the same.
To my surprise (and joy), my husband also assumed I would homeschool our munchkins. With the help of computer programs, books, and an awesome homeschool group, I had managed to homeschool myself through the last year of school (actually, I combined my sophomore and senior year together in order to graduate early) and had thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Of course, he knew I would want to homeschool our children so they could know the thrill of active, involved learning- the sort which is custom fit to each child.
So many people believe that homeschool is just that… schooling at home. They believe our children will become hermits, afraid of the world, and severely handicapped when it comes to socialization and interaction. I suppose there are some parents who hide away their children, but most homeschoolers do the exact opposite.
We believe in getting our children involved in the community- teaching them how to become good citizens and how to interact with people of all ages (not just those their own ages, as is taught in most schooling systems). We believe in teaching them by showing them, by getting them involved- not just by a book. We believe in custom-fit learning- fitting the style and effort to their personalities and interests.
Sure, we want to protect them from what the “world” has to offer. Not only do I dislike the fast-paced learning which has become the norm these days (They’re now offering tutoring for preschool!), but I find that kids are learning things they need not learn for a long time- like the ins and outs of sex and all the vulgar words associated with it. So yes, I do want to protect my children, shield them. There is nothing wrong with that- in fact, it is our duty!
Please, leave us a note if you drop by… especially if you have a blog of your own!
